The European External Action Service (EEAS) represents a formidable challenge for the European Union (EU) and marks the arrival of a veritable European diplomacy on the world stage. This paper examines some pertinent and often overlooked questions surrounding the launching of the EEAS, notably its impact on the traditional domains of European diplomacy, the introduction of European diplomats and the need to build an EEAS 'esprit de corps'.
