l?ecei ved Marcli 30, 1965 The variegated plant which appeared in my experiments in 1959 was described in a previous report (Lilienfeld 1962) , and so was its first progeny. The original plant was designated by the symbol V (for variegated) and its offspring in the direct and further selfing generations were denoted by V1-V. In the course of the experiments it became clear that variegation was only one aspect of a more general phenomenon of a functional disturbance of the plastid system. But,
more » ... nce variegation was apt to appear at least sporadically in any form and at any stage of the disorder, the designation "variegation sensu lato" seemed to be appropriate. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Selfed offspring of the variegated plant V (1) V1 and V2 generations As previously reported, four consecutive pods were obtained from the original plant V. The seeds were sown, separately from each pod, for the V1 generation (Nos. 027-030)
