The essay explores the different translations of Gen. 4:1 in terms of the use of the word ַ֖ע ָד ,י the reference to ׁ יש ַ֖ ,א and the use of the phrase ָֽה הוָ ת-יְ ,אֶ all three handled differently in the interpretation in the textual traditions that followed. By all accounts, it seems that conception and birth in Gen. 4 follow the standard formulas, except Eve's proclamation at Cain's birth.
