Urban design defines the value of urbanised areas. Increasingly newer challenges that stand before designers make it necessary to search for new methods of analysing sites subjected to the creative process. This paper presents studies on qualitative changes to urbanised areas. The method that can be used to do so is analysing areas under study based on the assumptions of the Kaizen philosophy. It is essential that society be one of the main participants, which is in Polish practice is often merely theoretical. Data for analysis can include both spatial parameters (storey height, building footprint, development density, function variety) and derivatives (insolation, noise, access to the road network, etc.). Any results obtained are dependent on the established element hierarchy and mutual linkages between data. The role of the planner is thus based not only on determining the form of use of each area, but also on determining border parameters and making decisions as to their hierarchy. The Function Mixer calculated an optimal function distribution, yet the spatial structure was defined by the user. (Stangel M. 2013, p. 47-48) This study was based on a review of the literature and the physical and social survey of a selected area. The objective was to present the results of research that led to the formulation of a site analysis procedure that utilises the Kaizen philosophy. ELŻBIETA CZEKIEL-ŚWITALSKA, SZYMON OLBRYCHOWSKI 125 URBAN ANALYSIS, AS BASED ON THE TENETS OF KAIZEN PHILOSOPHY Philosophical studies on space in European culture lead to Thales of Miletus and his student Anaximander, who assumed the principle (arche) of reality to be boundlessnessapeiron (Greek τὸ ἄπειρον to apeiron from the word πέρας peras 'end', 'boundary') (Tatarkiewicz W., 1981, p. 26-28). It is a common element that links the philosophy of ancient Greece with the Buddhist philosophy of the East, which assumes emptiness (pāli. suññatā; Sanskrit śūnyatā; शू न्यता -emptiness,
