The objective of this study is to evaluate blood pressure (BP) values in relation to anthropometric parameters in Brazilian children and adolescents. This is a retrospective cross-sectional study. A convenience sample of 378 pediatric participants (pts) from 4 months to 19 years of age (yrs) was evaluated, by the Pediatric Nephrology Unit Instituto da Criança -HCFMUSP in screening campaigns, in the period between 2005 and 2007. Reference data for weight (Wt) Height (Ht) and body mass index (BMI) from the"Centers for Disease Control and Prevention" and National Center for Health Statistics", 2000 edition were adopted. Up to three consecutive oscillometric BP measurements were performed to define pre-hypertension (pre-HT) and hypertension (HT). Reference blood pressure data from the "National High Blood Pressure Education Program Working Group on High Blood Pressure in Children and Adolescents", 2004, edition were adopted for pts up to 17yrs. For older pts, the "Seventh Report of the Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Eva luation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure" reference criteria were adopted. Approximately 50%, pts of both sexes were older than 10yrs. The study population's mean and standard deviation for Wt, Ht ,BMI, W/age index and Ht/age index were 35.63 ± 16.39 kg, 134.27 ± 25.21 cm and 18.60 ± 3.64 kg/m 2 , 59.1 ± 30.1 and 55.7 ± 30.1. The frequency of OW for children below 2 yrs using the Wt/recumbent length percentile was 7/21 pts (33%), all male. Using the BMI percentile for age and gender, the frequency of OW for both sexes was 4%, 16% e 17% for the age ranges between 2 and 5 yr, 5 and10 yr and above 10 yr. The prevalence of OB, in these age ranges, was 19%, 12% and 11%. In the study population a significant difference in the distribution of BMI percentiles weight status Introdução Zinner SH, Rosner B, Oh W, Kass EH Significance of blood pressure in infancy.
