I am a Consultant Physician with interests in both teaching and clinical research. Five years ago, I left a full-time NHS clinical role that I'd developed for 27 years and travelled to East Africa to assist with caring for refugees and street children. This article describes how this new role has evolved and how other opportunities to teach and undertake clinical research have developed in the same area over the same time period.
