Lithium Fluoride Tile and Sheet for Neutron Shield By Keiji KANDA As shielding materials for thermal neutrons, LiF tile and LiF sheet have been manufactured, which produce little secondary γ-rays by neutron captures. Lithium fluoride tiles in ceramics are made by sintering. The standard sizes are of 50×50×10 and 100×100×10mm3 for natural Li, and of 25×25×2 and 50×50×2mm3 for enriched Li. The density of the tiles is more than 95% of the theoretical density for preventing tritium release due to

The neutron shielding effects of both the materials were measured by the use of the KUR heavy water facility. The LiF tile has already been used for a shielding material and also for a mock material of FLiBe at several research institutes in Japan.
