On November 15, 1718, Tsar Peter I signed a decree appointing D.G. Messerschmidt as a leader of the first scientific expedition to Siberia. The expedition lasted for 8 years, and its findings remain historically unparalleled in terms of the extent of the tasks performed and the volume and value of the information collected.
