The thesis presents the Jewish Enlightenment and the political philosophy of the Berlin philosopher Moses Mendelssohn. His struggle for a legal and stable civic status for the Jewish population in the 1770s is at centre of this research. His effort for political and religious freedom rights is also investigated. The processes of secularization within the state, the granting of civil rights and tolerance towards religious minorities should facilitate acculturation in the civil society and
