The Correlation of Fracture Toughness and Transgranular Fracture in Al-5.6% Zn-2.5% Mg Alloys with Small Additions of Fe

The dependence of fracture toughness (KIC) upon the area fraction of transgranular fracture was investigated on four Fe-content Al-5.6% Zn-2.5% Mg alloys aged at 393 K. The results show that, for each alloy, KIC is linear with that is, where a and b are constants. Furthermore, the two constants are correlated with the fracture toughness of transgranular fracture and that of intergranular one as follows, and Empirical values of and are determined from the above relation for each alloy.
