Water levels in aquifers must be continually monitored in order to adequately register variations in the dynamics of water flow in the subsurface saturated zone. In recent years, sensors have been used in abandoned wells in order to automatically measure water levels, at least one time per day. The optimization criterion was the reduction in the estimation error variance of the groundwater levels at particular space-time positions and with a fixed monitoring frequency. The methodology was applied to the selection of sites to be instrumented in an aquifer in Zacatecas, Mexico.
