Ma jor burn in jury re mains a sig nif i cant cause of mor bid ity and mor tal ity in pe di at ric pa tients. The treat ment of burned chil dren dif fers sub stantially from that of adults not only be cause of the dif fer ent body pro por tions but also be cause of the met a bolic pro cesses in volved, hor monal responses, the im mu no log i cal pro file, the de gree of psy cho log i cal mat u ra tion and heal ing po ten tial. The se ver ity of burn in jury is char ac ter ized by the depth of the burn, to tal body sur face area (TBSA) that is in volved, the lo ca tion of burn in jury and the pres ence or ab sence of in ha la tion in jury. Early ex ci sion and graft ing, ad e quate nu tri tion, al le via tion of the hypermetabolic re sponse, treat ment of hyper gly cae mia, and phys i cal ther apy im prove sur vival and out comes in chil dren with se vere burns.
