BaSb2Se4 crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P21/n, with a = 923.7 ± 0.8 pm, b = 2076 ± 3 pm, c = 855.1 ± 0.8 pm, β = 91.2 ± 0.1°. One half of the Sb atoms form ψ-tetrahedra with three neighbouring selenium atoms, the other half forms ψ-trigonal bipyramids with four selenium atoms. These polyhedra are connected by common corners and edges to twisted chains which are ordered to sheets with Ba ions between them
