The genome of most prokaryotes gives rise to surprisingly complex transcriptomes comprising not only protein-coding mRNAs, often organized as operons, but also harbors dozens or even hundreds of highly structured small regulatory RNAs and unexpectedly large levels of anti-sense transcripts.
