The MR complex, containing the Mre11 nuclease and the Rad50 ABC ATPase, is a key sensor and processing factor for DSBs. Using structural, biochemical, and genetic studies, Lammens et al. show that the bacterial MR complex is an ATP-controlled DNA clamp.
