RESUMO Este artigo tem o objetivo de destacar o trabalho dos catadores de materiais recicláveis, essencial para garantir o reaproveitamento de resíduos que seriam depositados em lixões ou aterros, perdendo todos os valores, ou seja, social e econômico, resultando em prejuízo ambiental. Neste caso, analisamos o caso da Cooperativa de Trabalhadores de Materiais Recicláveis de Presidente Prudente (COOPERLIX), que surgiu em 2001 a partir de intervenções de universidades e poder público municipal, para retirar trabalhadores do lixão de Presidente Prudente/SP e organizá-los em uma cooperativa. ABSTRACT This text aims to highlight the recyclable material collectors work, which is essential to ensure the reuse of waste that would be deposited in dumps or landfills, losing all values, which is, social and economic, resulting in environmental damage. This way, this activity developed by these workers provides to thousands of families jobs and income, but does not exempt them, in many cases, of being in a precarious work situation. The analysis is from the organization of these workers in cooperatives or associations, ensuring an orderly work. In this case, we analyze the case of the Recyclable Materials Worker's Cooperative from Presidente Prudente (COOPERLIX), which emerged in 2001 from operations of universities and municipal authorities, to remove workers from the dump of Presidente Prudente/SP and organize them in a cooperative. The article also analyzes the prospects and difficulties after 11 years of its implementation.
