T his essay discusses European pictorial representations of North America women in six prints from sixteenth-and seventeenthcentury books. By analyzing the shifting forms in which European artists presented two women of Virginia, I hope to raise some questions about cultural history. What do these related images reveal about the gendered eye of the Europeans who made them and for whom they were intended?
