Prenatal development of rat thyroid C-cells was immunocytochemically investigated in culture. Immunoreactivities for calcitonin (CT) and CT gene-related peptide (CGRP) were used as the markers of C-cell differentiation. The thyroid glands at various gestational ages were enzymatically dispersed and cultured in Dulbecco's modified Eagle medium supplemented with 5% fetal calf serum and 4% rat embryo extract.
