Sprent (1968)

Sprent (1968) observed that Ascaris specimens from Phacochoerus aethiopicus aeliani from Kenya, possessed spicules shorter than those in Ascaris suum of similar size from pigs and suggested further investigation to determine whether spicule length justified the validity of A. phacochoeri. The present writer examined seven male Ascaris specimens 81.0 -105.0 mm long (Mean = 93.5 mm) and three female Ascaris specimens 97.3 -155.0 mm long (Mean = 121.1 mm) collected from the warthog (Phacochoerus aethiopicus aeliani) in Kenya by Dr. J. Berger, Wellcome Research Laboratory, Kabete and compared them with 4 male Ascaris suum 98.8 -133.0 mm long (Mean = 117.4 mm) and 5 female Ascaris suum 102.0 -122.0 mm long (Mean = 113.6 mm) collected from pigs (Sus scrofa) in S.E. Queensland, Australia. Seventeen morphological parameters were measured and compared but the only distinct difference found was in the length of the spicule. In the specimens from warthog the spicules measured 0.40 -0.67 mm long (Mean = 0.55 mm) while in Ascaris suum from pig the spicules measured 0.87 -1.73 mm long (Mean = 1.30 mm). Examination of the structure of the lips, the papillae patterns in the male and the shape of the eggs as well as examination of histological sections of the oesophageal glands, the cervical V-shaped bars and the structure of the spicules failed to reveal any further differences.
