The aim of this thesis is threefold; a) To show the distribution in Canterbury Land District of Farm Settlement Bocks purchased by the Crown and allocated to ex-servicemen between 1915 and 1924; b) To discuss briefly the purchase, settlement and development of these farm blocks, and, c) a detailed analysis of the factors contributing to the severe problems encountered during the operation of the first major land settlement scheme for dis-charged servicemen between 1915 and 1940. more » ... lable for research, it has not been possible to investigate in detail every feature of the agricultural repatriation programme in Canterbury. There are, however, certain themes which dominate any discussion of this topic, the principal of which is failure of the soldier settlers themselves, and of the scheme as a whole. Using Canterbury as an example, this essay attempts to clarify these statements and determine their validity.
