SUBMITTED: 05.07.11 REVISED: 11.11.11 ACCEPTED: 12.11.11 Refugees bring with them a range of previous experiences, usually traumatic, that influences their employment opportunities, to possible dependence on welfare programmes and other available supports. The hopelessness and loss of future aspirations that accompany such traumatic experiences are risk factors for self-harm which hinders their participation in society, especially as employees.
