Computer assisted language learning tools, especially language learning software programs, enable learners to decide for themselves when and where they want to study, so learners become independent from organizational structures of regular language courses. At the same time, studies in the research field of computer assisted language learning have shown that the rate of learners quitting the program is high due to various reasons like technical shortcomings, the design of the learning process

Since there exists a limited amount of studies analysing language learning softwares from the perspective of learners' experiences, the goal of this study was to contribute to a fuller picture of computer assisted language learning possibilities by examining learners' personal experiences with the software Rosetta Stone. The research design consists of expert interviews with test persons who have completed a learning process with Rosetta Stone. The interviewees' role as experts is based on their experiences collected during the learning process. The interviews were conducted by reference to 13 key questions. Principles of the Qualitative Content Analysis were used to analyse the data. The analysis was conducted in three steps. First of all, the material was filed into ten descriptive categories before expanding the inventory of categories by using an inductive step of analysis. Due to surprising results, hypothetical inferences were developed in order to bring new insights and explanations into the research field. Some facts that had already been discovered in previous studies like the possibility to arrange the learning process according to one's own needs on the positive side or the absence of some essential language learning features (e.g. writing and grammar instructions) on the negative side were confirmed by the test persons. More positive and negative aspects were identified like the fast and [...]
