Preface This year an attempt has been made to develop a Biology and Medicine Division annual report that presents a coherent, integrated, and balanced portrayal of the research activities of the Division. The decisions on the program emphasis for this new format were made by an editorial committee made up of Group Leaders and Deputy Group Leaders. As a result a much heavier burden fell on them as the contact points between the contribu tors and the Associate Laboratory Director's Office. In this capacity
