This paper presents an overview of strategic knowledge as a component of the reader's prior knowledge and its effect on reading comprehension. Different works which show the benefits of applying strategic knowledge to the reading process are revised, to focus on studies in second and foreign language reading comprehension. These show a positive effect of overt instruction on the use of reading strategies, especially those related to text structuring and the recognition of rhetorical functions
