"Assessment of the Phenolic Contents, Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Activities of Oxalis Pes-Caprae"

Oxalis pes-caprae (O. pes-caprae) is a perennial herbaceous plant of the Oxalidaceae family, native to South Africa. View the richness of plants in bioactive secondary metabolites, researchers devoted much attention, in recent decades, to natural components and their potential biological activity as an antioxidant, antimicrobial etc. The aim of this study was to assess the phytochemical content, antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of five organic and aqueous extracts of O. pes-caprae
more » ... stems, leaves and flowers from the region of Beni Khalled (Tunisia). Petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate, ethanol, methanol and water were used for the preparation of extracts from different plant parts by maceration. The results revealed that the ethanol, methanol and water extracts have large amounts of polyphenols and flavonoids. Furthermore, the petroleum ether, chloroform and ethyl acetate extracts were the richest in condensed tannin contents. The antioxidant effects of the extracts were determined by DPPH, ABTS, β-carotene and FRAP assay method, which showed that various extracts of different plant parts possesses a strong activity. Antimicrobial activity was also tested against two Gram-negative and two Gram-positive bacteria and one fungi strain by using the microdilution assay. Among the tested extracts, the ethanol and methanol extracts exhibited the strongest antibacterial and antifungal activities. Study of correlation has shown a strong relation between flavonoids contents and antioxidant activity of different plant parts. Thus, our result suggests that O. pes-caprae extracts may serve as potential sources for new antioxidant and antibacterial secondary metabolites.
