Postpartum psychosis is an acute mental disorder that occurs after childbirth with a prevalence of 1-2 cases per 1,000 births. The disorder usually occurs suddenly and is a medical emergency that often requires hospitalization and medication. However, in some cases they signal the onset of chronic psychiatric illness.
