Recent Advances in Immunotherapy for the Treatment of Cancer

| Immunotherapy based approaches to modulate the body's own immune defense mechanism to fight cancer is gaining momentum due to its successful application for treating different types of cancers recently. There are four major types of immunotherapy approaches including nonspecific immunotherapy using immune-modulatory molecules, monoclonal antibody therapy, vaccines, and cellular immunotherapy. Approval of Dendritic cell based therapy by regulatory authorities has led to the recognition of immune cells as drug for treatment of clinical disease. Other modes of immune cell based therapies including Natural killer cells and T cells are also under various stages of development. This review is aimed to provide an overview of different modes of immunotherapy and its application in human and animals.
