From 1980 onwards, with the decrease in power generation and transmission investments and the increase of electricity consumption, electric power systems began to operate more and more close to their operational limits, resulting in a phenomenon widely overlooked so far: the voltage stability. In turn, from 1990 onwards, with the beginning of the deregulation of energy markets, small generators could integrate electric power systems in a distributed way. This fact has been called distributed generation and has presented significant growth prospects. Although both aspects have attracted the interest of power systems engineering community, few studies have evaluated the short-term voltage stability problem considering distributed generation dynamically and from the point of view of system operators. This work consists of the above assessment, including the evaluation criteria and the characteristics of the Brazilian electric power system. The results show that the disconnection of distributed generators contributes negatively to the operation of the electric power system, leading to voltage collapse at some cases. As a proposed solution, less restrictive settings were evaluated for the protection functions associated to the distributed generators, which presented satisfactory results. In addition, Monte Carlo simulations were performed, attesting to the robustness of the results obtained in terms of operation point of the evaluated test system.
