Politeness strategy is always associated with a group of people with different social backgrounds. In their conversation, some people tend to apply different politeness strategy depends on the status of the people whom they are talking to. One of the situations where the politeness strategy happens is in a classroom. more » ... ect and the context, classroom situation is selected as the data source in analyzing politeness strategy and the factors that influence it. There are two objectives observed in this research. The first one is to categorize the types of politeness strategy in the instructions of the lecturers. Each strategy is classified based on its characteristics. The second is to find out the factors that influence each type of the politeness strategy in the lecturers' instructions. This research applied purposive sampling method. The data were collected by observing the types of politeness strategy in the instructions of three "Introduction to English Literature" lecturers. Each lecture from each lecturer was recorded that the result was, then, transcribed into a script. After having the written data, the researcher analyzed it by using the approach of pragmatics, specifically the theory of politeness strategy. There are thirty-one utterances which appear in this research. After analyzing them more deeply, the researcher finds that there are thirty one utterances of politeness strategy. It consists of fifteen utterances of positive politeness, seven utterances of negative politeness, eight utterances containing bald on record, and one utterance categorized as off record. Based on the answer to the first research question, the second problem can be answered as well. Apparently, social distance and power are the factors triggering each lecturer to apply different types of politeness strategy. The lecturer who applies positive politeness strategy the most has an intention to be closer with the students, but the lecturer applying negative politeness strategy more often is considered to have a social distance with the students.
