This essay considers two catastrophic earthquakes that took place in Kingston, Jamaica in 1907 and Port-au-Prince, Haiti in 2010. The disasters remain central to the collective memory of each place yet often remain peripheral to their national narratives. The article reflects on the relationship between natural disaster and memory in the Caribbean through these two examples.
