BACKGROUND: Bilirubin has antioxidative and cytoprotective properties. Low plasma concentrations of bilirubin are reportedly associated with the development of coronary and cerebrovascular disease, and bilirubin concentrations are strongly correlated with the enzyme activity of the hepatic uridine diphosphate glucuronosyltransferase (UGT1A1).
