A discussion is giv en o f in fo rm a tio n w hich m a y be o b ta in e d concerning th e electonic s ta te s in v o lv ed in th e 2S -> 2P tra n sitio n b y analysis of th e m ag n eto -o p tic a l effects b y th e m e th o d o f m o m en ts. I t is show n, for exam ple, t h a t th e sp in -o rb it coupling c o n sta n t o f th e 2P s ta te o f th e silver a to m is red u ced from 613 cm -1 in th e free s ta te to 365 c m -1 in KC1, to 102 c m -1 in K B r a n d to a n u n m easu ra b ly sm all v alue in K I.
