Fast charge/discharge and long cycle life properties are just some of the electrochemical properties that make such devices a strong candidate for advanced energy storage devices. In order to unravel new applications, development of means to increase capacitance, cell voltage, and safety issues as well as methods to lower resistance and cost are progressing. World-wide research on new and advanced electrode materials, electrolytes, and hybrid cells are being developed. Innovative electrochemical capacitors, including conventional electrolytic, electric double layer, redox, pseudo, and lithium-ion capacitors, are projected to contribute significantly to a green sustainable society. Various international conferences have been held throughout the world regarding this issue, including The International Conference on Advanced Capacitors 2013, which will be held in May 2013 in Japan. This special issue "Advanced Capacitor Technologies for Energy Innovation", is devoted to aid in the growth of research and development in this emerging field. This issue seeks to capture the state-of-the art in the electrochemical capacitor field and solicits papers that cover all fundamental and applied aspects as mentioned above.
