Using a human colonic adenocarcinoma cell line (COLO-201), we have revealed that cell adhesion to extracellular matrix (ECM) influences morphology and growth, and the expression of nuclear DNase I-sensitive sites, or genome exposure sites, of the cells. The cells which had been plated on basement membrane extract, matrigel, developed duct-like structures in vitro. The cells plated on ECM substrata showed a retarded growth pattern in the early stage
