Digital games are categorized in different genres such as "action games", "casual games", "art-games" etc. which makes it easy to direct the right target gamer auidence to the right digital games. But from the perspective of game studies, using these genre conventions is problematic. A genre categorization based on game form and narrative is needed for a critical analysis of games. This paper will elaborate on existing genre approaches in game studies, which are offered as critical alternatives
