T he effect of fields on th e n e t charges induces m an y diverse effects. Changes in ra d ia tio n from th e pyrolysis zone a n d in th e site a n d form of carbon deposition are only th e m o st a p p a re n t ones. B y v a ry in g th e residence tim e in th e pyrolysis zone, p article size a n d hence th e to ta l am o u n t of carb o n form ed can be v aried v e ry greatly. P ositive flam e ions a p p e a r to a c t as nuclei a n d th e ir n e u tra liz a tio n b y seco n d ary negative charge decreases carb o n form ation. P ra c tic a l ap p licatio n s are discussed in te rm s of th e th eo ry u n d e r each of th e headings of n ucleation, g ro w th a n d deposition in th e presence of fields.
