In this work, a unified study of the dynamics of the symmetrical physical pendulum in the phase-plane are presented. Three oscillation modes as plane, elliptical, and conical were obtained using an effective potential approach. The potential depend on the nutation coordinate and three adjustable parameters (reduced energy and reduced angular momenta) of the system.
