Here, too, present usage tends to run parallel to the use of the subjunctive in indirect discourse. After a present tense the indicative is usual, after a past the subjunctive. Er bindet den Baum an, damit er gerade wichst. Er band den Baum an, damit er gerade wachse. While this treatment of purpose clauses is recommended for elementary instruction, it should be stated, however, that the subjunctive after a present tense is not as infrequent here as in indirect discourse and indirect questions. The first example above may also appear as: Er bindet den Baum an, damit er gerade wachse. Here, as generally, the indicative is more usual in everyday speech, the subjunctive in more choice language.
