A Brief Discussion on the Origin and Diachronic Evolution of the Chinese "not only p, but also q"

The Chinese sentence pattern "not only p, but also q" is originated from the sentence pattern "not only p, but q" in the Western Han Dynasty. After long-term development and change, the sentence patterns such as "not only p, also q", "not only p, and q" and "not merely p, but q" has appeared successively. It was initially formed in the Qing Dynasty and developed rapidly during the Republic of China.
