Analysis of the spatial growth of the city of Kolda between 1965 and 2019

Boubacar SOLLY
The urban sprawl of the city of Kolda has gradually shifted to the rural communities of Saré Bidji, Dioulacolon and Bignarabé. The trend towards spatial recomposition of space is currently giving rise to a problem and a major interest for local authorities. Thus, the measurement and quantification of the consumption of spaces in this rapidly changing city constitute a fundamental axis for a spatial diagnosis. This study analyses the spatio-temporal growth of the city of Kolda from 1965 to 2019

The methodological approach is based on the processing of multi-date satellite and aerial imageries (1965, 1978, 1990, 2005 and 2019) and on field work (semi-structured interviews). The results show a spatial extension of the city of 111.4 ha between 1965 and 1978, 200.9 ha between 1978 and 1990, 625.2 ha between 1990 and 2005 and 781 ha since that date. The interviews revealed that the factors behind this spatial extension are socio-economic, political and security. And that the consequences relate to the loss of plant and agricultural land, the lack of sanitation, unhealthy conditions, the resurgence of floods, land disputes among others. The redefinition of boundaries and the implementation of new urban planning documents remain today the main emergencies in order to control the ongoing dynamics and for good urban governance.
