The objective of this study is to develop a system which automatically constructs a database in order to generate high quality NC program realizing optimum machining processes. The datal)ase is constructed by relating cutting features to machining states and cutting conditions in a hierarchical structure. A cutting feature represents a basic and characteristic form to be removed in a ¢ ontinuous cutting process, and is defined as a set of ordered cutting patterns with contirruous cutting tool location data. A cutting pattern indicates a cutting method and a geometric status between a cuuing tool and a workpiece, and a cutting pattern with cutting conditions means the geomeuic status and cutting methods.
