The Metaphorical Perceptions Of Teacher Candidates Towards The Concepts "university" And "academic Staff"

The aim of this study was to determine the metaphors of teacher candidates about the concepts "university" and "academic staff". This study is a qualitative research. Data were collected via metaphors. The sample of this study consisted of 336 first grade students studying at the Hacettepe University Educational Faculty that were determined by criterion sampling. more » ... ause ...". As a result, 14 categories with 133 metaphors about university and 11 categories and 94 metaphors about academic staff were produced. The university metaphors are mostly gathered under Cultural Variety (22.6%) and Universities as Free Places (13.3%) whereas academic staff metaphors are mostly gathered under Academic Staff As a Guiding Person (19.3%) and Required When Needed (26.1%) categories. 114 study group was composed of Hacettepe University Education Faculty 1st grade teacher candidates that were determined via criterion sampling. Study group was composed of 201 female and 135 male teacher candidates. Of the participants, 47 were studying at the Computer Education and Instructional Technology department, 80 from Psychological Counseling and Guidance Department, 50 from German Language Education Department, 55 from Class Teaching Department, 33 from Physical Education Faculty, 28 from English Language Education Department, 43 from Pre-School Teaching Department. In order to reveal out the metaphorical perceptions of teacher candidates, they were asked to complete the following sentences; "Universities are like ... because ..." and "Academic staff are like ... because ...". In the analysis of data, 5 steps were followed which are, (i) naming, (ii) sorting, (iii) developing categories, (iv) validity and reliability (v) frequency and interpretation. Result and Discussion 336 teacher candidates produced 133 metaphors for the university concept under 14 categories and 94 metaphors for academic staff under 11 categories. 14 categories for university are university as cultural variation, university as a living place, university as future, university as experience, university as a production center, university as development place, university as a change tool, university as knowledge production center, university that have no end road, university as a free place, university as comprehensive environment, university as social network, university as place that freedom is limited. The metaphors are mostly gathered under the cultural variety (22.6%) and free place (19.3%) categories. 11 categories for academic staff are, academic staff as authority, required when needed, transformer of knowledge source, trainer, judgmental entity, technological entity, guiding person, changing entity, giving fear, improving, not taking responsibility. The metaphors are mostly gathered under academic staff as guiding entity (19.3%) and required when needed (26.1%) categories. Bu araştırmanın amacı öğretmen adaylarının üniversite ve öğretim elemanı kavramına ilişkin sahip oldukları metaforların neler olduğunu belirlemektir. Bu araştırma mecazlar yoluyla veri toplayan nitel bir araştırmadır. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu ölçüt örnekleme yoluyla belirlenen 336 Hacettepe Üniversitesi Eğitim Fakültesi 1. Sınıf öğrencileri oluşturmaktadır. Katılımcılardan "Üniversite ... gibidir, çünkü ..." ve "Öğretim elemanı ... gibidir, çünkü ..." cümlelerini tamamlamaları istenmiştir. Araştırma sonunda üniversite kavramına ilişkin olarak 14 kategoride 133 ve öğretim elemanı kavramına ilişkin 11 kategoride 94 metafor üretilmiştir. Üniversite kavramına ilişkin metaforlar en çok Kültürel çeşitlilik (%22.6) ve Özgürlük Yeri Olarak Üniversite (%19.3); öğretim elemanı kavramına ilişkin metaforlar ise en çok Yönlendirici (%19.3) ve Yerine Göre İhtiyaç Duyulan (%26.1) kategorilerinde toplanmıştır. © 2016 IOJES.
