This article explores the history and foundation of the Shabo colony in south Ukraine. It draws on archival material and research from the Ukraine, Switzerland, France and Germany. Shabo was founded in 1822 and by the 1880s the people of the time were calling it the "richest colony in the Russian Empire." The article devotes much of its attention to the person who founded the colony. Among other things, we present new biographical information discovered during the course of our research.
