Localization and Pattern of Deformation in Thermo-Visco-Plastic Material

Homogeneous shear deformation in thermo-visco-plastic material may become unstable due to thermal softening. Moreover, it was shown that the coupled dissipative work rate causes the deformation zone to contract. The balance of dissipative work rate and heat diffusion, which otherwise tends to extend the deformation zone, leads to quasi-static narrow shear band.
