The concept of an Explorer-class satellite that will meet some of the needs of the astronomical community for ultraviolet spectra of astronomical objects of all types is described. This satellite is called SAS-D. The project is receiving scientific guidance from an international group and it is hoped that it will become an international observing facility developed and managed jointly by NASA, by the United Kingdom, and by ESRO. The ultraviolet spectra will be recorded by means of TV cameras.
