However, delivery of interprofessional, interinstitutional education remains a daunting challenge. Building on five years of collaborative activities, health professions faculty from three universities participated in the development, planning, and facilitation of a half-day interactive "healthcare summit." Students in medicine, pharmacy, nursing, social work, nutrition, physician assisting, occupational therapy, and physical therapy participated in activities to improve knowledge and value of professional roles and training requirements, build interprofessional communication skills, and develop teamwork approaches using a case-based discussion of a geriatric care scenario.164 interprofessional health professions students completed pre and post evaluative surveys, which included demographic, knowledge-based, and attitudinal questions to detect changes in students' values and perceptions of interprofessional collaboration and understanding of team members' roles and training requirements. Paired samples t-tests were employed to assess change.Following summit participation, students made statistically significant gains in their knowledge of other health professions' roles and training requirements, as well as in seven of ten interprofessional values and attitudes. The largest gains were in the perception that interprofessional teams are more likely to treat patients as whole persons and are more responsive to patients' emotional and financial needs.A case-based interprofessional seminar is a promising approach for enabling students to improve knowledge of other health professions' roles and training requirements. In addition, it supports the development of values and attitudes that can aid interprofessional collaboration for enhancing care quality for older adults.
