Effect of Gamma Irradiation on Thermal and Mechanical Properties of Commercial High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Lined disposal pits of Petroleum Waste

The aim of this paper is to investigate the changes in the mechanical and thermal properties of Commercial High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) sheets that use in lining disposal pits of petroleum waste due to exposure gamma rays. This paper consists of two parts. First, RESRAD-BUILD code has been used to evaluate the total effective dose that can be received by HDPE due to the gamma radiation introduced from the contained sludge. more » ... ucture of the HDPE samples after gamma irradiations using Thermo-Gravimetry Analysis (TGA). The mechanical properties are evaluated by measuring tensile strength and elongation. HDPE sheets with different thickness (1 & 2 mm), was irradiated with gamma 60 Co source at doses of 5, 10, 15and 25 kGy at a dose rate of 5 kGy/h. The Effect of Gamma ... E.F. Salem et al. 202 obtained results indicated a variation in the mechanical and thermal properties of HDPE lined disposal pits depending on gamma dose, which means HDPE is useful to use for temporary storage of sludge. While for long periods of storage, the storage area requires periodic radiation surveys to ensure gamma levels are not increasing above certain hazardous levels and/or site contamination is not occurring due to leaking containers.
