Joseph John f'ar mer was born on 5 May 1854. He attended a loca l school in Kings Cross, and thereafte r was apprenticed to the building trade. However. at the age of 13 years he went to sea with the Mercantile Marine serving aboard English and American shi ps. Tn 1875 he was shipwrecked oIT the Isle of Wight. and again a
more » ... ear later in a hurricane off Hong Kong. He left the sea in 1878. a nd on returning home he [ell ill with smallpox. It was then that Farmer's career changed directio n. \VhiIsl still under medical care he saved the life of a delirio us pa tien t who tried lo jump out of a window. When he had recovered from his illness. he took an appointment as a night porter ,to look afler deme nted patients. Another ~imil ar appointment followed. and after hav ing his interest in medical matters furt her awakened he joined tbe Army Hospital Corps o n 27 February ] 879. Followin g a co urSe in anatomy and ambulance work he left for th e Cape of Good H ope.
