Gateway to Siberia: the Architectural Heritage of Verkhoturye and Ekaterinburg

The article consists of an analytical survey of the architectural monuments of Ekaterinburg, together with the historic towns of Verkhoturye and Nevyansk. In Vekhoturye the article focuses on the first half of the 18th century and the Trinity Cathedral in particular, but attention is also devoted to the Monastery of St. Nicholas and its Cathedral of the Elevation of the Cross, a major work of early 20th-century Russian church architecture. more » ... primarily on the architecture of Ekaterinburg from the mid-18th century to the late Soviet period, with particular attention to the city's important Constructivist buildings. A special feature of the article is its photographic documentation, done largely in 1999 before the building boom that has transformed much of the urban milieu.
