There are four stages in the history of the links between psychoanalysis and psychiatry in France. The first concords with the start of the Second World War and the setting up of the Vichy regime and was a time of pioneering. The second phase, in the years following the war up until the end of the sixties, was that of expansion. The third, from the seventies to the nineties was a time of domination of psychoanalysis over psychiatry.
